Stratton Bowling Club

Poundfield, Stratton, EX23 9AX

History

The club was founded in 1929 by the Stratton Traders Association and celebrates its 90th Anniversary in 2019. It is now held in trust and continues to be one of the only surviving legacies of the town of Stratton.

It has over eighty full members of both sexes, with ages ranging from 30 to 90’s. In 2007 the club provided both the Ladies and Men’s County Presidents, a unique honour for the club.

In 2004 the club raised the sum of £42,000 to extend the clubhouse (with the help of the Blanchminster Trust) and this was officially opened by Mr. Chris Cornish. This extension provided disabled facilities, additional changing rooms and a bar area.

In 2005 we set about raising funds to replace our old green laid in 1929 and completed the project in 2009. The total cost was £27,000 and this was made up of £19,000 raised by the club and grants of £8,000 from North Cornwall Sports and Recreation Committee, The Balsdon Trust (Holsworthy) and Pendeen Car Boot Sales (Mr. Chris Heard).

Our club provides sporting facilities for all generations and has qualified coaches who offer their services free to all new and current members.

The current outdoor season runs from April to September and Short Mat Bowls is played on two mats in the clubhouse during the winter months.

The Men’s Section have been Group Outdoor League Champions for the past five years and a mixed team of twelve were County Runners-Up in the Millennium Trophy in 2018.
